Fourthing.

Happy (belated) 4th! I would have much preferred a long 4th of July weekend, but it was nice to have a mid-week break. Ben and I decided to get out of dodge for a bit. We had hoped to go for a hike but that was not going to happen in this heat. Instead, we borrowed a friend's car and decided to drive out to Virginia and explore a little. Remember this post on Sperryville? We decided to venture out that way.

It was nice. I like car time. On a whim, we decided to stop swing by the Inn at Little Washington. We jumped out of the car to peak in the windows and what was supposed to be a 3 minute detour turned into an hour behind the scenes complete tour! For those that aren't familiar with it, the Inn at Little Washington is supposedly the best culinary experience you can find in DC. The meal starts at $200 and the likes of Julia Child and Queen Elizabeth have made the pilgrimage out for dinner.  So back to the story, we peaked in some windows and then walked behind one of the buildings to get a look at the view and so I could take a picture of these chairs.

Then we ran into Anita. Anita works at the Inn and was sweeping off the back patio and immediately offered to show us inside the "Mayor's House" that is next to the gift shop and is one of the many buildings where guests stay. Of course, we couldn't say no and wanted to see what the rooms looked like, so we followed Anita in. Well, from there, Anita took us all over and into every building. I mean, all over! I am not sure, in total, how many rooms we saw, but let me just say, we can definitely advise on the different rooms if ever you want to know!

She took us into the Claiborne House, where you can stay for a mere $2450/night. Included in this little house is a full kitchen. Take a look at this gorgeous island that Ben and I could not get enough of.

The bathrooms throughout the place were phenomenal, including the tubs!

She also took us through the Julia Child and the Jacques Pepin rooms that are above the restaurant.

Anita then insisted on showing us the inside of the dining room. Here is one part of it.

And, then took us in the back to the kitchen so Ben could get his fix!

Not pictured are the many other rooms we saw and the pond, the fish and the gardens outside. She just wouldn't stop! It made our afternoon. So cool to see the whole place. Both of us agree it is not our kind of place, but nonetheless, amazing!

After that we were starved. We continued on to Sperryville where we grabbed lunch at the Thornton River Grille. We popped into the Main street convenience store. I loved the old wood floors and classic old signs.

We got back on the road and went to meet up with the Skyline Drive. It runs about 105 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. We drove about 30 miles back in the direction of DC stopping at the overlooks and winding around the roads!

Finally, to make it a true 4th of July, we stopped at Dairy Queen. Oh yeah! My Aunt Belle used to always treat us to DQ on the 4th of July before fireworks in Boyne City, so it hit the spot. And just look at the beautiful soft-serve dipped in chocolate!

Fantastic day! We were in bed by 9:30, which for most doesn't sound like a good time, but for us, we were thrilled by 9 hours of glorious sleep!
