Cape Verde. I am still campaigning for Morocco but I like to keep an open mind and a running list of places that peak my interest. Cape Verde officially made it on today. I have a crush. Let me explain the attraction and take you on a virtual tour...
Cape Verde is made up of a group of islands about 500 miles off the coast of Senegal. The islands are apparently gorgeous, blue blue water, amazing beaches...you get the point. Yet, Cape Verde is full of contrasts. The islands have a relatively high standard of living when compared to most of Africa, but still suffers from incredible poverty. Its separation and isolation from the rest of the continent has given it a lonely feel and famine has forced many to emigrate. At the same time, Cape Verde has been responsible in controlling the development and tourist attention it is now getting. And, fortunately, it is still off the beaten track enough that it isn't run over.
From what I have read, Mt. Fogo is quite the attraction, to walk up the frozen lava and reach its peak. The leftover Portuguese influence is apparent. The canyons and valleys of Santo Antao are by all accounts spectacular. Apparently, Mindelo is lined with cobblestone streets and colored colonial buildings. You can visit the salt mines, swim in the reefs, and eat fresh fish morning, noon and night!
Oh yeah, and Cesaria Evora, the famous singer? She is from Cape Verde...hence the lonely, longing songs I guess....
