outstanding in goshen.

Kentucky part two...here we go! As I mentioned below and also way back in February in this post, our long-awaited Outstanding in the Field dinner was on Saturday in Goshen, Kentucky. To start it off, we had a gorgeous day. The leaves are starting to turn, it was chilly but fresh and crisp outside, and the sky was clear.

Our dinner was on Woodland Farm and it is quite possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of property I have ever seen. The Farm is owned by Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson who also own, among other places, the 21c Museum Hotel and Proof on Main in Louisville. The Brown family also happens to own one of the largest American companies in the spirits and wine business. So yeah, it was a, how do we say, rather large piece of property. In fact, it is actually the single largest Kentucky property registered in the state. In short, it is huge and every bit of it is gorgeous.

The cocktail hour was on the lawn in front of the main house with sweeping views over the Ohio River. I'll stop here for a moment and let the pictures speak for themselves.

After drinks, appetizers and a brief talk by the founder, we went on a short walking tour up towards the dinner table. The Farm is very much working and among other things produced is bison.
There were beautiful horses as well...

We were particular struck by this tree swing...

The dinner itself was placed with a spectacular background view of the river with horses right up near the table.
The food was very good. We had bison tartare, fall squash, pork loin, buffalo corned beef, and a sweet potato dessert. Of course, they also provided ample bourbon and wine.

Most importantly, we lucked out with who we sat with at the table. Obviously, this is a crap-shoot.We ended up sitting next to two great couples that had come together and were from the area. One of them, Michael and Michele, had also come last year. Both couples were a bit older than us (40s) and were just great company. At the end of the meal they invited us back to their house about ten miles down the road to enjoy their fire pit. We love fire pits and their Kentucky hospitality was so generous. We loved every second of it and Ben loved Michael's bourbon!

It was an incredible day. All of it. And, it is rare that something can truly live up to the hype, this one more than succeeded!
